e-Shram Card in 2026: Real Benefits, Who Should Register and Who Should Not

ई-श्रम कार्ड के फायदे · Updated · 4 min read · By the NeedUp team

The free e-Shram card gives unorganised workers a UAN identity, ₹2 lakh accident insurance and priority in welfare schemes. What it genuinely gives in 2026, the myths (no, there is no monthly ₹1,000 for everyone), and 5-minute registration.

What the card actually gives

The e-Shram card registers an unorganised worker — labourer, farm worker, domestic help, gig/delivery worker, street vendor, tailor, driver — on the national database with a 12-digit UAN. With it comes ₹2 lakh accident insurance cover (PMSBY terms), portability of benefits across states, and increasingly, direct targeting for central and state welfare — several states route labour-board benefits, and the One Nation One Ration Card linkage, through e-Shram.

What it does NOT give: there is no universal monthly ₹1,000 "e-Shram bhatta" for every cardholder — that claim circulates on social media every few months. Cash transfers happen only under specific schemes (state payouts to registered workers during specific programs).

Who should register

  • Any worker aged 16–59 without EPF/ESIC — construction, agriculture, MGNREGA workers, shop staff, delivery and cab partners, home-based workers
  • Students with no work and salaried employees under EPFO/ESIC are NOT eligible
  • Income-tax payers are not eligible

Registration in 5 minutes

  • Open eshram.gov.in → Register on e-Shram, or send a request on NeedUp.
  • Enter Aadhaar and the OTP from the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  • Fill occupation, education and bank details.
  • Download the UAN card instantly; update details any time on the same portal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the e-Shram card give ₹1,000 every month?

No. There is no universal monthly payment for cardholders — that is a recurring rumour. Payments come only from specific schemes that use the e-Shram database for targeting.

What insurance does e-Shram include?

₹2 lakh for accidental death or permanent disability and ₹1 lakh for partial disability, under the PMSBY-linked cover for registered workers.

Can a farmer with land register on e-Shram?

Cultivating farmers are generally covered under PM-Kisan rather than e-Shram; landless agricultural labourers should absolutely register on e-Shram.
